About
My slow flow classes have been providing a relaxed, friendly environment for the Kingborough community to breathe, stretch and unwind for a few years now.  I use plenty of cues to make sure you are able to get out of your monkey mind and grounded into your body.  The practice is slow yet dynamic, so some poses are strong but everybody gets to move at their own pace and take rest when they need to.  There is no pretence, no expectation of you to be anything other than exactly where you’re at, and my classes are a welcome mix of educational, challenging and just the right amount of daggy.  There is no pouting into a mirror or taking yourself seriously.

Props will be provided.  BYO mat (I will have some spares so ask me if you need one)

About
I’m offering this course as a solution for all the folks who are too intimidated by the marketing out there that misleads people into thinking they have to be white, skinny, female, able-bodied and flexible to do yoga.  Yoga is for everybody and I want you to feel welcome as a complete newbie to give this a crack.

If you have always wondered about yoga, heard how good it is for the mind and body,  but never tried it, I have a 5-week introductory course just for you.  I will guide you through some of the foundational postures (asanas) and breathing techniques (pranayama) and make sure you know how to move safely and confidently through this ancient practice.  You don’t have to have done any yoga before to be here and there will be time and space to ask questions and get practical support.

Props will be provided.  BYO mat (I will have some spares so ask me if you need one).

stiff blokes yoga

About

($200 price is for entire 8-week course)

Many women who I swim with and speak to tell me they wish their husbands would attend a yoga class.

I considered how I feel walking into a gym full of muscly men. I have also been thinking about how I want to deglamorise yoga & dispel the ableist myths that yoga is for skinny girls wearing Lulu Lemon in tree pose on a mountain top, or for extra bendy bodies wrapping legs around their necks. If you can breathe, you can do yoga so let’s start there.

I’m offering a safe space for men to stretch and increase flexibility, strength and relaxation in the company of other men.

Perhaps you aren’t stiff now but want to prevent becoming that way, especially with the winter months approaching. I will explain what we are doing with plenty of cues. Your class membership also includes a one-on-one session with me, so I can get to know each person really well and tailor the classes accordingly. This special course will be limited to 10 blokes.

Contact me if you would like to arrange a dedicated one-on-one session where I can help you work out how to get the most out of your yoga journey.

FAQ

The most common style I teach is hatha yoga.  We begin with pranayama (breathing practice) to ground, then stretches to warm up the body.  We move through some slowed-down sun salutations (or moon, depending on the lunar cycle), building to a peak pose, after which we cool down with some stretches and rest in savasana.

I don’t really believe in the notion of levels in yoga because it creates competition and needing to achieve, which is not what yoga is about.  Come as you are, breathe and move at your own pace, with kindness and compassion for the parts of you that aren’t so flexible.  Flexible doesn’t necessarily mean better, i.e., I’m hyper mobile in some joints meaning I’m more prone to injury.  We all have different length bones and mobility in our joints, therefore it is going to look different for each person.  The key is to do the pose safely for your body and feel into what works for you.

I offer plenty of cues on alignment and am happy to discuss modifications or alternatives after class if you’re having trouble with something.

BYO mat, bottle of water and, if desired, some comfortable clothes for savasana (closing meditation).
All props will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

This can be used for 6 months.  Cancellations less than 24 hours before a class lose that class from their bundle.
